New Covid-19 Vaccine Mandate for Truckers crossing into Canada

Disruption in Trucking might continue as the pandemic drags on.  A Covid-19 vaccine mandate for is now in effect for truckers crossing into Canada from USA. As of 15th Jan, Canadian truckers must be fully vaccinated in order to avoid quarantine & pre-arrival test; unvaccinated drivers are to return back from the border.

This has caused confusion in the trucking industry as earlier last week, Canada Border Services Agency  had suggested backtracking on the rules.

The mandate could potentially cause some slowdowns at the border in the coming days. It might worsen the driver shortage, which is likely to be felt cumulatively in the coming weeks and months.

According to the Canadian Trucking Alliance, up to 26,000 of 160,000 truckers who make regular cross-border trips will be sidelined. This will add to further bottlenecks and potential price hikes to the flow of goods into the country.

The US has planned to impose a similar mandate for any driver crossing into the US from Canada & Mexico as of 22nd Jan.
